Mustique was imported as a four year old from Holland. She is by Indoctro/Capitol 1 out of Jutha by Grannus.
She was very successful as a young horse, then three years ago she was injured. After she recovered from her injury, she still exhibited aches and pains and general body soreness that just didn’t respond to medications.
USET team veterinarian, Tim Ober, suggested that a dietary change might help and recommended BioStar in the summer of 2008. After consultations with BioStar Formulator, Tigger Montague, Mustique and two other horses were put on a whole food diet along with BioStar whole food formulas: Furnace and Equilibrium.
Two months later, the staff at Lothlorien reported that Mustique and the two other test horses had responded incredibly to the change in diet. Mustique was less cranky, and much more comfortable, looser, and happier. When Dr. Ober checked Mustique in the fall as part of her regular veterinary check up, he found she didn’t need her routine joint injections or medications.
Lothlorien then put all 13 of their horses on the whole food diet and BioStar products including hemp oil, for the benefits of balanced omega fatty acids and GLA.
BioStar sat down with owner Sue Grange and farm manager Jenn Kerr to talk about whole food and what it takes to keep a barn of successful jumpers sound and happy. Sue: It’s a team effort. It’s the diet, the BioStar supplements, our staff, our veterinarians, our focus on fitness as well as rest for these horses. We use an aqua-tred and that has really helped all our horses maintain and increase fitness. Turn out is also important.
Jenn: Some of the differences that I see in Mustique are that she is so much happier in her mind and body. She used to be quite grumpy and now she is much happier and better to groom and work around. She goes out to work and enjoys it much more now. It was not difficult to switch to whole foods. We feed 13 horses a whole food diet and BioStar.
Tell us about Mustique’s personality.
Jenn: Mustique can be sweet and lately she likes to talk a lot. She will whinnie to me when I come up to her stall, and when she is on the treadmill she is talking back and forth with the other horses. But when I am getting her ready to go to the ring she is all business.
She knows that it is time to do her job, and she will do it to the best of her ability. Mustique has a lot of heart.
Other than Furnace and Equilibrium, what other BioStar formulas do you feed Mustique?
Jenn: Mustique’s program also includes BioStarl’s Star Maker and StarLyte EQ which has helped her stamina and endurance, as well as a quicker recovery time from the rigors of grand prix jumping.
